Harald's Geocap page

My Shared Commands

This is a set of commands that are not a part of the official Geocap release. Geocap is programmable, and it is possible to create your own commands. Single commands or folders with commands may be exported (right-click) and export to a file, then imported by another Geocap user. In the following paragraph you may download the commands I share with other Geocap users.

To get these commands:

  1. Download these commands here (last update, April. 19th 2012) and put them somewhere on your disk.
  2. Open the toolbox (View > Toolbox), and import the shared commands (on top level preferably) by right-clicking the Shared Commands: and Import

Note that you will have to run the initialization command (one time only) in each Geocap session. This is the command "00. Activate Harald's Shared Commands" and it needs to be executed on a project item. It will pop up a brief explanation.

The above mentioned initialization may be avoided by downloading this script and save it in your C:/Users/Harald/geocaprc-6/userscripts/startup folder.

(Mini) Area Generator

The (Mini) Area Generator is a set of scripts combined with a folder structure of datasets. The system fits into the Geocap User Scripts. Whether it is Mini or Full version, depends on the data collection, the set of scripts will be the same.

Download the latest version (updated Feb 29th 2012) of the Area Generator here. This download of the Area Generator is only valid for Geocap 6.0.6 and newer versions.

Contact support@geocap.no to get access to the Mini Area Generator data collection.

In order to use the MiniAG, do the following:

  1. Put the folder Area_Generator in User Scripts

The User Script folder is called userscripts and usually located in a location similar to this:

    C:/Users/Harald/geocaprc-6/userscripts (for Geocap 6)

In order to find the userscript folder on your machine, do

Tools > User Scripts > Help

After you have placed the Area_Generator folder in userscripts, the situation is like this:

    C:/Users/Harald/geocaprc-6/userscripts/Area_Generator
  2. Make sure you have the data needed.

The data are usually in a folder called master_data and with it's content it should be something like this:

    master_data
      |
      +--Coastline
      +--ECS
      +--Geodas
      +--Global_Grids
      +--Global_Point_DB
      +--Industry
(and more if you have the full version)

Note that you may also add you own global data in Global_Grids or Global_Point_db.

  3. After having put Area_Generator in the userscripts you can restart Geocap and find the MiniAG under
Tools > User Scripts > Area_Generator. Start the Mini Area Generator.
  4. You need to locate the master_data folder.

In the panel, browse for Master data directory.

  5. You also need a folder for output. That folder MUST be called Area or area.

Create that folder somewhere on your disk, and browse into Area root directory (output).

  6. Almost ready, just for convenience do (in the Mini Area Generator panel) Tools > Save directory setup ...

Then it will be remembered, and you do not have to browse over again in every Geocap session.

  7. Type in a coordinate range, e.g.
    North : 10
    South : -10
    West : -10
    East : 10

and set the projection e.g. to Mercator Central Meridian 0, WGS-84.

  8. Do Tools > Preview topographic view to create an on-the-fly visulization of the selected area.

If needed also press the Preview button to create a 2D visualization of the selected area.

  9. Now - If you want to create a project, click the Global Select/Deselect to toggle on all data. Note that some of the listed data categories may be unavailable.
  10. Type in a name for your project, avoid special characters, but 'space' and - and _ are OK.
  11. Press the "Generate Area" to start producing the files that are used for the build. (Observe the Abort button).
  12. When the Area is Generated (fully or partially) you may click the "Build Project" button and a Geocap Project is produced from the .../area/Area Name/

User Scripts

Check here: http://andeby.no/geocap.no/userscripts for useful scripts that you can put in your "Tools > User Scripts". If the file is zipped, it is probably a folder that you can put in your User Scripts.

Documentation

Find our online documentation on www.geocap.no/doc

In the Geocap 6 versions we have also put PDF-versions of the documentation on the Help pulldown.

The old Geocap documentation contained a lot of useful scripts that are still valid. So - for new and old script-enthusiasts - here it is: The Old Users Guide

Useful additional documentation: Tcl/Tk

The VTK hompage with Kitware.
